Geared for children who completed kindergarten through fifth grade, there will also be activities and a reading club for teens (those who completed sixth – twelfth grade) and adults.
One popular program is the Reading Challenge. It will begin on Thursday, June 1st and continue through Saturday, July 15th. The Challenge will be based on the time spent reading, not the number of books read.
Minimum amount of time for each category is Kindergarten through 3rd grade - 15 minutes daily, grades 3rd – 6th – 30 minutes daily, grades 6th – 8th - 45 minutes daily and grades 9th -12th – 60 minutes daily. Third (3rd) and Sixth (6th) graders are welcome to participate in one of two different groups depending on their individual reading skills and interests. Adults are encouraged read a minimum of 90 minutes per day.
Participants are encouraged to sign up for the program by visiting the Library and filling out a form in person or by visiting the Library’s home page at www.plainviewtx.org/library. Registration is currently open and is available through Friday, June 16th.
Once the submission form is completed, an email invitation for the ReaderZone app will be sent to track reading minutes and statistics. Those not wanting to download the app may obtain paper logs from the Library beginning Thursday, June 1st or during normal library hours.
Also, the Library will be offering a variety of programs centered on themes of kindness, friendship, manners, helping, and working together throughout the summer; the Science Spectrum in Lubbock will also offer two programs on Thursday, July 6th. Dates and times for programs will be available through a calendar that each registered participant will receive beginning mid-May or through announcements made closer to the event. Registered participants will also receive a weekly newsletter with announcements and other information.
Furthermore, Andy Mason Music will be showcasing his musical talents and entertainment at the first week’s program on Wednesday, June 7th at 10:00 a.m. The event is open to all ages.
Registration for the Summer Reading Club is available at www.plainviewtx.org/library or at the Library (825 Austin Street). All residents of Plainview and greater Hale County are welcome to participate.
