The Plainview Point Monument, near 300 Joliet Street, is a national historical marker that recognizes the place near the Runningwater Draw where distinctive spearpoints were discovered and associated with the fossilized remains of about 100 extinct bison.
These unique spearpoints, called Plainview Points, have since been used to name an entire culture. The culture and the spearpoints are believed to have existed about 8,000 years ago.
Plainview youth, along with some members of the local Boy Scout troop, made the discovery while on an outing exploring a caliche quarry in 1941. Measurements of the site are recorded by the Museum of the Llano Estacado in case of any future excavations. The city filled in the site after the last excavation when the city came into possession of the land.
If you have any questions about the monument or would like more details, please contact the City of Plainview at (806) 296-1100.
