Fire Safety TableCity of Plainview Fire Department Kicks off Fire Prevention Week 2024

The City of Plainview Fire Department kicks off Fire Prevention Week, October 6th – 12th

Sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®), this year's theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” aims to educate everyone on the role that functioning smoke alarms play in preventing fatalities during home fires.

According to NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

The City of Plainview Fire Department offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
  • Smoke alarms need to be placed on the ceiling or as high as possible. Carbon monoxide alarms need to be placed close to the floor.

Stop by City Hall, 202 W. 5th Street, to pick up educational items for you and your kids. For more information, call 806-296-1100.

 * Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.

          * Smoke alarms with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year. If that alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.

          * When replacing a battery, follow manufacturer’s list of batteries on the back of the alarm or manufacturer’s instructions. The manufacturer’s instructions are specific to the batteries (brand and model) that must be used. The smoke alarm may not work properly if a different kind of battery is used.
